Instead of the conventional way of using a sound module to actually create the sounds you can also bypass the sounds engine on a lot of modules (or use dedicated trigger modules like the Roland TM-2) and use the trigger capabilities to work together with stand-alone software for example by Toontrack to get great sounding kits!
